Include correspondence, legal and financial papers of the Steeles Tavern, Augusta County, Va., family and the related Smith, Massie, Moon, Moore, Calvert and Searson families. The correspondence chiefly concerns family news and genealogy. Topics include land purchases, estate settlements, horse trades, cattle raising, hard times after the panic of 1837, family members who emigrated to Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri and California. Of interest are mention of McCormick's reaper, 1833, the whipping to death of a slave, 1842, Tippecanoe Clubs, 1840, the Virginia secession convention, 1861, John Tyler's death, 1862, and a religious revival, 1867.
